Waves defeat Mariners in battle of area rivals

Lombard earns a 408-198 win against Villa Park; both teams concluded regular-season action on July 1

The Lombard Waves faced the Villa Park Mariners at Paradise Bay Water Park on Saturday, June 27. The Waves defeated the visiting Mariners 408-198.

Lombard’s individual champions in the meet included Evan McNulty, who won three races in the 11-12 boys division. He earned his first-place finishes in the 100-yard individual medley, which he completed in 1 minute, 25.22 seconds. He also won the 50-yard butterfly (40.70 seconds) and the 50-yard breaststroke (38.00).

Connor Wedel of the Waves also won three individual events in the meet against Villa Park. Competing in the 13-14 boys level, he won the 50-yard freestyle (27.02), the 100-yard individual medley (1:13.44) and the 50-yard butterfly (30.72).

Mason McKenna provided Lombard with three individual victories in the 15-18 boys division. He won the 50-yard freestyle (24.51), the 100-yard freestyle (54.55) and the 50-yard backstroke (29.78).

Lombard’s two-time individual champions in the meet against Villa Park included Natalie Rogers, who won the 50-yard freestyle (40.42) and the 50-yard backstroke (48.00) in the 9-10 girls division. Daniel Petrine of the Waves swam to first-place finishes in the 50-yard butterfly (48.94) and the 50-yard breaststroke (1:03.17) in the 9-10 boys level.

Hannah Rogers of Lombard won the 100-yard individual medley (1:26.60) and the 50-yard breaststroke (44.81) in the 11-12 girls level. Betsy Balgemann of the Waves also won two races in the 11-12 girls level. She earned her wins in the 100-yard freestyle (1:10.43) and the 50-yard backstroke (37.46).

Jimmy Cali of the Waves won two events in the 11-12 boys level of the meet against Villa Park. He won the 50-yard freestyle (35.18) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:24.39).

Lombard’s other individual winners in the meet against the Mariners included four swimmers in the 8-and-under girls level: Hannah DeKoekkoek (25-yard freestyle; 22.99), Isabella Vasquez (50-yard freestyle; 51.26), Sally Fagan (25-yard butterfly; 27.54) and Katherine Van Kampen (25-yard backstroke; 22.95). The Waves’ champions in the 8-and-under boys level included Gavin Donakowski (25-yard butterfly; 23.48), William Balgemann (25-yard backstroke; 24.37) and Joey Hitzker (25-yard breaststroke; 28.64).

Claire Wedel (100-yard individual medley; 2:13.41), Sophia Lenhart (100-yard freestyle; 1:48.31), Amaris Ali (50-yard butterfly; 48.57) and Parker Bergman (50-yard breaststroke; 52.37) provided the Waves with wins in the 9-10 girls level. In addition to winning a race in the 8-and-under boys level, William Balgemann of Lombard won the 100-yard individual medley (1:56.85) in the 9-10 boys division.

John Nelson of the Waves won the 50-yard backstroke (41.54) in the 11-12 boys division. Ruby Wilson-Dierich (100-yard freestyle; 1:09.21) and Matilda Sproule (50-yard backstroke; 41.15) provided Lombard with wins in the 13-14 girls level. Joshua Massengale (100-yard freestyle; 1:11.20) and Luke Bolotin (50-yard backstroke; 38.45) swam to victories for the Waves in the 13-14 boys division.

Lombard’s Caitlin Hageman (50-yard freestyle; 29.60) and Zola Nowicki (50-yard backstroke; 33.56) won races in the 15-18 girls level. Benjamin Bates of the Waves won the 50-yard butterfly (27.84) in the 15-18 boys division.

Villa Park’s individual champions in the June 27 meet in Lombard included Lydia Aldana, who won three races in the 13-14 girls division. She delivered first-place efforts in the 100-yard individual medley (1:17.62), the 50-yard butterfly (33.57) and the 50-yard breaststroke (37.68).

Ethan Aldana of the Mariners won two races in the 8-and-under boys level. He earned his victories in the 25-yard freestyle (19.64) and the 50-yard freestyle (42.72).

Three other Aldana siblings were two-time individual winners in the June 27 meet. Ruth Aldana won the 50-yard freestyle (31.48) and the 50-yard butterfly (39.05) in the 11-12 girls level. Phoebe Aldana swam to victories in the 15-18 girls division’s 100-yard individual medley (1:12.66) and 50-yard breaststroke (36.15). Naomi Aldana of the Mariners won the 15-18 girls level’s 100-yard freestyle (59.43) and 50-yard butterfly (28.87).

Villa Park’s Brycen Newell earned two wins in the 9-10 boys level of the meet in Lombard. He won the 50-yard freestyle (46.25) and the 50-yard backstroke (1:04.73).

The Mariners’ other individual winners in the meet against the Waves included: Mia Boswell (8-and-under girls; 25-yard breaststroke; 36.33), Ryan Lloyd (9-10 boys; 100-yard freestyle; 1:31.66), Brooklyn Gibney (13-14 girls; 50-yard freestyle; 35.79) and Caleb Vaughan (13-14 boys; 50-yard breaststroke; 38.85).

The Waves’ June 24 home meet against Hanover Park was canceled due to storms. Villa Park’s June 24 home meet against Carol Stream was also canceled because of the stormy weather.

Lombard and Villa Park finished their regular-season schedules on July 1. Lombard faced the Carol Stream Dolphins in Carol Stream, while the Mariners battled the Woodridge Sea Lions in Woodridge.

Some Lombard swimmers will conclude the 2026 season by competing in the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference’s Red Division ‘B’ Meet in Bartlett on July 11. Other Waves will finish the season by swimming in the conference’s Red Division ‘A’ Meet in Glendale Heights on July 18.

Some Villa Park swimmers will complete the season by competing in the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference’s White Division ‘B’ Meet in Bloomingdale on July 11. Other Mariners will close out the season by swimming in the White Division ‘A’ Meet in Woodridge on July 18.
