Willowbrook senior gymnast Jae Newman won the state championship on the horizontal bar at the Illinois High School Gymnastics Coaches Association (IHSGCA) boys state meet at Hoffman Estates High School on May 16. Newman, who represented the Willowbrook/Addison Trail co-op team at the state meet, earned a first-place score of 9.3 for his routine on the horizontal bar.
Newman finished second on the vault (9.65) at the state meet. He delivered third-place scores in both floor exercises (9.5) and on the parallel bars (9.35), and he placed seventh on the still rings (8.25). Newman finished eighth on the pommel horse (8.1). He placed fourth in the meet’s all-around standings with his total score of 54.15. The Willowbrook/Addison Trail squad finished fifth in the state meet’s team standings.
