BARBARA “BARB” LEE DELL, 83

Posted

A Life of Teaching, Connection, and Joy. Barbara “Barb” Lee Dell, 83, passed away peacefully at home in Elmhurst on April 24, 2026, with cremation following.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, David; her children Cheryl Lynn White and James Humphreys Dell (and his wife Danielle); five grandchildren (Lily, Abby, and Natalie Dell; Zachary and Zoe White); and her sister Elaine Rauch. She was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Allen.

A Chicago native, Barb moved to Glen Ellyn at age 10 with her parents, Samuel Lee Allen and Helen Mansch Allen, and her siblings.

She earned her degree from Northern Illinois University and built a fulfilling career as a high school Mathematics teacher at York High School in Elmhurst and later at Addison Trail High School.

She then transitioned to her role as an amazing stay-at-home mom, Girl Scout leader, cheerleader at the kids’ sporting events, and mom taxi to every activity under the sun.

When the kids reached high school, she returned to York, where she shared her passion for learning by independently mastering new computer skills while mentoring students in the math computer lab.

Beyond the classroom, Barb was a devoted friend and family member who cherished time spent with loved ones.

She was an accomplished duplicate bridge player whose competitive spirit (fueled by her desire to beat all family members, including her own children, at Yahtzee!) and infectious enthusiasm brought her friendships that spanned decades.

Her curiosity and creativity flourished though genealogy research, travel and cruises, games, and arts and crafts — pursuits that kept her engaged and vibrant throughout her life.

She will be missed dearly by all!
